Isar Aerospace: Second launch strengthening Europe’s autonomous access to space

Isar Aerospace has successfully completed its second launch from its dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space in Norway, with its Spectrum rocket reaching orbit. This is the first time a privately developed rocket has reached orbit from continental Europe.

Isar Aerospace has successfully completed its second launch from its dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space in Norway, with its Spectrum rocket reaching orbit. This is the first time a privately developed rocket has reached orbit from continental Europe, marking a key step in advancing Europe’s autonomous access to space. The mission, titled “Onward and Upward”, was a combined flight and qualification campaign aimed at validating the launch vehicle’s critical systems under real operational conditions. For the first time, the company carried customer payloads, including five CubeSats and one experimental mission. It will generate operational data that will feed directly into the industrialisation of its Spectrum launcher and support the emergence of a new European launch service.
European Commission backing new space players
The European Commission has been actively supporting the development of a competitive European launcher ecosystem, with Isar Aerospace emerging as a prominent beneficiary of this strategy. The company was awarded the
EIC Horizon Prize for Low Cost Space Launch
in 2022, accompanied by ten million euros in funding, recognising its contribution to independent and affordable access to space for Europe. This support is complemented by initiatives such as the
Flight Ticket programme
, which helps new launch providers like Isar Aerospace to demonstrate their capabilities in flight, accelerating time to market and strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty in a rapidly evolving global space sector.
Autonomous, resilient and competitive access to space is a strategic enabler for Europe’s economy and security, underpinning applications such as navigation, telecommunications and Earth observation that citizens and businesses rely on every day. Looking ahead, the European Commission proposed a new
Multiannual Financial Framework with a European Competitiveness Fund
for the period 2028-2034. It includes an access to space component supporting demand aggregation and joint procurement of launch services, innovation in space technologies and the development of critical ground infrastructure, in coordination with other European public entities, including Member States, the future EUSPA and the European Space Agency.
