Summary

UK Defence Innovation, with the UK Space Agency and Dstl, has launched the fourth 'Space to Innovate' drop, seeking technologies for space domain awareness/ISR/comms sensor-to-response chains, self-protection of space platforms, and resilience against ground-based electromagnetic threats. Up to £900,000 is available for projects of up to 18 months at TRL 3-6, via a two-stage process (Stage 1 deadline 28 July 2026, Stage 2 deadline 1 September 2026). Previous drops awarded over £4.2m to 19 organisations.

Dstl and the UK Space Agency are on the hunt for more innovations to improve future space capabilities for defence and security

UKDI has launched a new themed competition - Space to Innovate: Delta Drop
Funded by the UK Space Agency and Dstl
Up to £900,000 funding available
Two-stage competition process
UK Defence Innovation (UKDI)
, in partnership with the
UK Space Agency
and the
Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl)
, has launched the fourth drop in our quest to find innovative solutions to improve future space capabilities for defence and security.
Since launching ‘Space to Innovate: Alpha Drop’ in 2021, Dstl and the UK Space Agency have awarded over £4.2 million in funding to 19 organisations. This funding has helped find and develop novel technologies to give the UK an advantage over adversaries in the space domain.
This latest Delta drop aims to continue this innovation by finding and funding technologies that may not otherwise be developed in the commercial space sector but are critical for defence and government use across three challenges:
Challenge 1:
Technologies to enhance future sensor to response capabilities, improving coverage and response times for Space Domain Awareness (SDA), Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and communications missions.
Challenge 2:
Novel technology approaches to self-protecting space based platforms.
Challenge 3:
Technologies to enable resilience against ground based electromagnetic threat.
Please read the full
competition document
before you enter your submission.
Key dates and funding:
Stage 1 submission deadline: 28 July 2026
Stage 2 submission deadline: 1 September 2026
Up to £900,000 is available for projects lasting up to 18 months, targeting
Technology Readiness Level (TRL)
3 to 6.
Background
As the UK increases it’s presence in the space domain, there is a growing requirement for advanced technologies to support defence and security operations. This includes improving how data is collected, processed and transmitted, as well as ensuring systems remain resilient against emerging threats. This drop aims to address these challenges by encouraging innovation from across industry and academia.

UKDI is the main low-barrier UK entry point for single-company defence innovation funding, and the Defence-side route is being rebuilt after the Defence Investment Plan — meaning the Security Open Call is currently the only broad open door. Relevant to autonomy, space, sensing and security-tech scale-ups and SMEs able to bid alone without a consortium. Do: Submit to the Security Open Call 2026 Cycle 1 by 27 August 2026 or Innovation Support to Operations Cycle 8 by 22 September 2026 via the UKDI portal, and email accelerator@dstl.gov.uk for scope clarification; contact the UKDI Help Centre about Defence Innovation Loans while cycles are paused.

IRIS² is now committed to deployment with a materially larger, defence-oriented segment, so SpaceRISE members (and their tier-1s) will open subcontract packages for satellite payloads, crypto/secure ground segment, terminals and launch services. Relevant to space and secure-comms suppliers — payload, optical/RF terminal, encryption and ground-station firms in EU/EEA — rather than to anyone bidding the prime role. Do: Approach SpaceRISE consortium members' procurement/supply-chain leads now with a qualified capability dossier for satellite subsystems, secure ground segment or user terminals ahead of the 2029 first-launch schedule.
